Does Theory work in Adobe Illustrator?

Where should the files go?

Q

I don't know where to put the Color Theory files once they've been installed.

A

No problem! Just download our Install Doc. This document will explain to you how to install and where to move the files afterwards. Basically, the application file stays in the Color Theory folder. if you've installed Color Theory Pro, the plugins files each get copied into the appropriate 'Plugins' app folder.

Why is the filter menu grayed out?

Q

Why is the Color Theory menu item grayed out in my Photoshop Filter menu?

A

Color Theory can only work on RGB images. If you are working with a file whose color mode is set to CMYK, Color Theory will be grayed out in the application's Filters menu.

To change your file to RGB in Adobe Photoshop, go to your Image> Image Mode menu and select RGB.

What are 'DV' and 'PS'?

Q

I've read reviews about DV Color Theory, and I saw on your website Color Theory Pro. Are these the same products or two different products?

A

Color Theory 'Pro' is what 'DV' Color Theory used to be. Color Theory 'Standard' is what 'PS' Color Theory used to be. We renamed the products when we took them over from the original developers in 2002. Therefore, older press reviews of Color Theory will identify the two versions as DV and PS.

Can I use a Pantone color?

Q

Can I use a Pantone equivalent in Color Theory? For instance, how do I specify the Pantone value in Photoshop?

A

Yes, you can easily use Pantones in Color Theory.

In Photoshop, you can find the Pantone equivalents by sampling the colors that you render out of Color Theory. Of course, each Pantone color breaks down into an RBG equivalent. Simply use Photoshop's Eyedropper tool to sample a color, then open its Color palette to look at the RGB equivalent.

You can also load a Pantone into Color Theory Pro. In Photoshop, apply a Pantone color to a small area of your layer, OR place a logo (or other graphic) holding that Pantone color onto your layer. Then apply Theory Pro to your layer.

In the stand-alone app, import a graphic that contains the Pantone color. In both cases, you can then can eyedropper the color with the Color 1 parameter, and use that Pantone as the basis for your color palette.

Upgrade from version 1.0.

Q

I purchased Color Theory awhile ago from a different company. It was called something else and I can't find my software anymore. Can you help me?

A

In July 2002, we took over the distribution and support of Color Theory from Matt Silverman and Theory LLC. As a service to the customers of version 1.0, we offer a free upgrade from version 1.0 to 1.5.1.

If you own the Photoshop version of Color Theory (PS) 1.0, we will upgrade you to Color Theory Standard. If you own the Digital Video version of Color Theory (DV) 1.0, we will upgrade you to Color Theory Pro.

Just email us using this Request Form. Please include your original serial number. We will send the upgrade as we do with all Digital Anarchy products, via an email with FTP links and your serial.

What is the current version?

Q

I have version 1.5 of Color Theory but I need it run on an Intel Mac. How do I update to that version?

A

The current Mac (and Windows) version is 1.6. We have an free update for you if you are an existing Mac owner of version 1.5. For the update, please contact us through this simple Request Form. NOTE: You must already own the product for the installation to work. It will not unlock the demo or install the full version of the product.

Does Theory support Illustrator?

Q

I thought that I read about Color Theory supporting Illustrator. However, I don't see that app listed on your website.

A

In earlier versions of Illustrator, Color Theory plugins did work. However, we have not actively tested the plugins since Illustrator CS. It's probable that Color Thoery does work in higher versions but we do not provide technical support at this time. Plesae contact us if you have a request for this host app.
